This quilt was made in 1849 either by or for Matilda
Graves. Research of local records reveals that a Matilda
Graves married Alonzo Hardy in Coldwater, Monroe County in
January of 1850. This quilt would be consistent with bridal
quilts of that time period. Further possibilities, or
clues of this attribution may come from the unusual
inverted "A" used as "V" in Matilda Graves appliquéd in
the corners: the incorporation of A for Alonzo in her
maiden name perhaps?
