This quilt was made in 1851 by Amanda Stevens, the great
aunt of the donors. The pattern is a combination of the
chimney sweep pieced block and appliquéd flowers. The
signatures are from around New York State, Pennsylvania,
and Michigan. This quilt was referred to as a "bridal
quilt" in earlier documentation.
One of the inscribed squares has this little poem:
If every kind word were a rose
And the rose had not a thorn
The path through life with loveliest flower
Fair friend I would adorn
