This exquisitely stitched table cover came to the Museum
through the Barry family of Rochester, NY, descendents of
Patrick Barry, founding partner of the Ellwanger-Barry
nursery and seed company.
The maker is unknown, but the technique and fabrics date the table cover
to the first quarter of the 19th Century. The beautiful
pattern is outlined with exceptionally fine hand
backstitching which could easily be mistaken for machine
work.
